Nigeria Versus South Africa: Size Matters, But So Does Development

By

What matters more: the size of the pie or how many mouths it has to feed? It depends whether you're eating pies, or selling them.

Most of Nigeria's 170 million people live below the poverty line, so many complained they didn't feel any richer when the oil producing nation's statistics bureau announced on Sunday the economy had replaced South Africa as the continent's biggest.

Nigeria's 2013 GDP was rebased up to an estimated nearly $510 billion - a "pie" one and half times the size of South Africa's, but feeding more than three times as many people.

Nigerian leaders hope the statistical revamp will help them "sell" Africa's most populous market to investors, including mall-builders, manufacturers and retailers offering everything from processed foods and household appliances to luxury cars.

But development economists argue that their attention should be on improving the health, education and incomes of ordinary Nigerians, many of whom struggle to feed their families. In 2013, the Economist Intelligence Unit rated Nigeria the worst place for a child to be born out of 80 countries surveyed.

According to him, he is confused right now and needs advice from matured readers who can reason above the mistakes he has made and help him out. Read his story below;

Dear readers, please I need your advice because I'm very close to doing something terrible to my baby mama. The story may seem a bit crazy but I really need your help.

I met this lady about 3 years ago, she was beautiful, tall and seemed really innocent, but very willing to learn. We hit off on a romantic road and started dating after a little while.

In the course of our relationship, she learned how to smoke from me; I didn't mind because I'm a smoker, but then she started to overdo it and got addicted to all kinds of drugs, not just cigarettes. Her addiction never really bothered me that much until she got pregnant for me and gave birth to our daughter.

We did our introduction last year and decided we would stop smoking, or at

Muslim Rights Group Votes Against Extension Of Emergency Rule, Advises WHAT FG Should Do Instead

By

Muslim Rights Group Votes Against Extension Of Emergency RuleThe Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) urges the Federal Government to drop the idea of extending the state of emergency in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States, says it has no purpose, and makes things even worse by endangering lives of innocent citizens.

The statement by MURIC mentioned that emergency rules are completely out-of-date methods, and rarely used in the modern world. It urged the FG to be more proactive. <

For instance, get more focused on intelligence gathering, spend more money on the army and acquire better weapons, as well as to recruit more men to police and the State Security Services (SSS), with subsequent improvement of their welfare. <

The group has also expressed dissatisfaction with Nigeria’s police ratio. It reminded that according to the recommendations by the United Nations, one policeman for every 488 civilians is an adequate value. However, the Nigeria Police Force has about 310,177 officers and men, while the SSS has about 33,000 personnel. >Therefore, to meet the world’s standards, Nigeria requires at least 577,608 policemen, if we take its population value of approximately 167 million people. Today’s ratio stands at 1,538 civilians per 1 policeman, which is not acceptable, mounts extra pressure on those policeman who are
