Jubilation as Plateau United Qualifies for CAF Champions League for the first time

Jubilation and wild celebrations have continued in Jos city and its environs as Plateau United FC made history by winning the new Nigeria Professional Football League for 2016/2017 season.

The Kennedy Boboye tutored side had on Saturday beaten Enugu Rangers 2-0 in Jos to win what is their first ever league title in their 42 years of existence.

After 38 gruelling league games, Plateau United amassed 66 points in total to become the 19th Nigeria league champions.

Aside from the giant trophy they lifted on Saturday, Plateau United FC popularly called “Lalong boys” also pocketed N50m having finished as champions, with the ticket to play in the lucrative CAF Champions League for the first time in Jos.

This fairytale is like the story of Leicester City FC of England, who gained promotion from the lower division and survived their first season in the topflight of English football, but won the league with a new coach in its second season in the league.

However, Plateau Utd in its first season in the NPFL after gaining promotion from the NNL, struggled to remain in the topflight, so at the end of the season the head coach of the team, Zakari Baraje was relief of his position, and Kennedy Boboye took over at the helms of affairs at the club, and just like Claudio Ranieri, won the title in his first season with the club.
